It is now illegal to light up in West Des Moines parks.

The West Des Moines City Council was considering a plan to ban the use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco and e-cigs in the city’s 29 parks. The council passed the final reading Monday night.

Violating the ordinance could cost you $100.

City officials say the ban is about promoting healthy lifestyles, especially for children.

Signs about the new ordinance will soon be posted in all West Des Moines parks.
