Program for Breast Cancer in Young Women

From Michigan Department of Health & Human Services

Physical activity is important for most people and can be safe before, during, and after cancer treatment.  However, you should always talk to your provider about what activities are right for you.  The American Cancer Society provides helpful information on physical activity for persons with cancer.  The National Cancer Institute provides background on why physical activity is important.

For some, exercise can be challenging.  There may not be the time or funds to support a gym membership or exercise classes.  There are free or low-cost programs that assist with increasing physical activity.

  • Walk with Ease:  Is low cost, has no geographic limitations, and can be done at home.  It was developed by the Arthritis Foundation, but the program is helpful for all adults, including those with a chronic disease.  it provides an optional 6 weeks of coaching by phone or online for free.  If you are a cancer professional, learn more about this program and how it might benefit your patients.
  • Livestrong at the YMCA:  Is available for free and was developed specifically for people with cancer.  This program is available in several area of the state.  Check with your local YMCA to learn more about this program.

Michigan’s Program for Breast Cancer in Young Women will be hosting an upcoming webinar providing more information on these programs.  See the attached flyer for more details.
