The CDC has identified clinical similarities in serious lung illnesses linked to e-cigarette use. While patients reported exposure to THC, nicotine, or both, no infectious diseases were detected. Investigators suspect chemical exposure but cannot yet identify a single product or substance common to all cases.

Smoke Free Sitka Community Cigarette Butt Cleanup Success Story

Sitka's HOPE Coalition transformed a smoke-free workplace challenge into community action. When Alaska's statewide law triggered outdoor smoking concerns, volunteers mobilized for monthly cigarette butt cleanups. Over 1,000 butts collected on day one! Now strengthened partnerships, increased volunteers, and a cleaner downtown showcase how grassroots efforts create lasting public health impact.

vaping CDC HEALTH ADVISORY: Severe Pulmonary Disease Associated with Using E-Cigarette Products

The CDC reports a multistate outbreak of severe pulmonary disease linked to e-cigarette use. As of August 27, 2019, 215 cases across 25 states have been documented, with one death confirmed. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and gastrointestinal issues. Many patients required hospitalization and supplemental oxygen. Investigations are ongoing to identify the cause.
