Supervises: None

Salary Grade: CCS 10

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Health Educations Specialist II will provide leadership and coordination in outreaching to target communities under various grant-funded health education programs. Also will develop and implement health education activities in a team-focused approach with other department staff to facilitate completion of all program activities. Activities associated with health education programs include but are not limited to coordinating and delegating training events, developing educational material, assisting in evaluation activities, providing informational presentations, serving as representative with various workgroups, networks, and/or task forces, etc.

Essential Functions:

1. Conducts and coordinates activities related to various health education programs.

2. Assists in evaluation activities including but not limited to survey taking, conducting key informant interviews, etc., on an as needed basis.

3. Provides training and technical assistance to tribal organizations, health clinics, and American Indian community members.

4. Monitors specifically funded program activities and special projects as assigned.

5. Disseminates updated information to project membership as needed and/or requested.

6. Obtains data regarding the health status of American Indians, including but not limited to physical conditions, social and cultural influences, behavioral risk factors, and programs and individuals offering services.

7. Serves as a health education resource to tribal organizations, American Indian organizations, as well as other professional organizations who serve American Indians and their communities.

8. Communicates health education needs, concerns, and resources regarding American Indian populations.

9. Acts as representative with various statewide workgroups, networks, and/or task forces.

10. Pursue funding opportunities to sustain and expand program activities, resources and longevity.

11. Prepares and disseminates all necessary program reports.

12. Regular and predictable attendance.

13. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Maintain a valid, unrestricted California Driver’s license and ability to be insurable under CRIHB’s automobile insurance. If employee has a valid license from another state, he/she must obtain a CA license within 2 months of hiring date.

2. Position requires occasional over night travel within CRIHB’s service area.

3. Requires ability to drive up to 7 hours a day.

Qualifications:

1. Masters Degree in Health related field preferred or Bachelors in Health Education or related field with two years experience in health promotion/disease prevention program implementation.

2. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

3. Experience in the public health field preferred.

4. Experience in research and research evaluation.

5. Ability to work on various computer programs such as word processing, and graphics software.

This position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of American Indian traditions, customs and socioeconomic needs and the ability at all times to meet and deal effectively in contacts with Indian organizations which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified American Indians in accordance with the Indian Preference Act (Title 25, U.S. Code, Sections 472 and 473). Applicants claiming Indian Preference must submit Indian verification, certified by Tribe of affiliation or other acceptable documentation of Indian heritage.
