The National Indian Health Board (NIHB), in collaboration with the Native Center for Behavioral Health (NCBH), will present a one hour webinar on Thursday, March 26, 2020 beginning at 1 p.m. ET. This webinar will go more in depth about the services offered by NCBH and will be presented by Dr. Anne Skinstad.
The Native Center for Behavioral Health is a research center located within University of Iowa College of Public Health. They have developed programs to assist behavioral health providers in understanding and implementing Native American & Alaskan Native cultural competency when providing services. They have transfer programs funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in the areas of addiction (ATTC), mental health (MHTTC), and prevention (PTTC), as well as tribal opioid response technical assistance (TOR TA), mental health technical assistance for K-12 schools (MHTTC-Supplement, and a tribal college and university initiative.
NCBH’s mission is to “serve subject-matter experts on culturally informed prevention practices, addiction treatment, recovery, mental health services, and support behavioral health professionals” by using evidence and experiential based methods. Services include trainings on curriculum, distance learning, newsletter, and specialty services. These trainings include Native American Curriculum, Alcohol and Drug Exam Review Training, Problem Gambling, The Spirit of Communication: Motivational Interviewing and American Indian Teachings; Ethics; and DSM-5 Training. Distance learning includes webinars on Essential Substance Abuse Skills, Mental Health Topics for Native American & Alaska Native Behavioral Health, and prevention for Native American & Alaska Native. They also have a newsletter, which is released quarterly on work that has been done by ATTC. Additionally, NCBH has specialty in leadership academy, spirituality and behavioral health, an annual symposium, and Dr. Duane Mackey “Waktaya Naji” Leadership. Lastly, products are on sale including publications.
