The Role of Quitlines in Commercial (Commercial) Tobacco Cessation

CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health released the following supplement in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The Role of Quitlines in (Commercial) Tobacco Cessation

Released to coincide with today’s launch of the 10th year of CDC’s Tips from Former Smokers campaign, this CDC-sponsored supplement disseminates scientific research on how quitlines provide support for cessation, including among populations that experience health disparities.  The supplement goes beyond addressing quitlines’ support for smoking cessation to address tobacco cessation more broadly, which includes combustible and noncombustible tobacco products such as e-cigarettes.

The supplement is organized around four themes:  reach, adapt, tailor, and innovate.  The articles in this supplement demonstrate the relevance and importance of quitlines as an essential population-level tool designed to increase successful quit outcomes.  Taken together, these articles present the evolution of quitlines as a population-based intervention, showcase efforts to customize services to reduce health disparities, acknowledge the diverse product landscape, and discuss ways to expand reach through technologic innovation.
