U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Releases Final Recommendation Statement and Evidence on Primary Care Interventions for Prevention and Cessation of Tobacco Use in Children and Adolescents

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends primary care clinicians provide education and counseling to prevent school-aged children and adolescents from starting tobacco use, including e-cigarettes. However, evidence gaps exist regarding cessation interventions for youth already using tobacco, requiring clinicians to exercise individual judgment.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Support for tribes to prevent, prepare, and respond to COVID-19 in Rural Communities

HRSA is distributing $15M in CARES Act funding to tribal organizations for COVID-19 prevention, preparedness, and response in rural communities. The funding notice posts April 21, with applications due May 12. Tribes can request support for testing, PPE, workforce needs, and telehealth services. Technical assistance available.

Indian Affairs to Assist Tribes Eligible to Receive Funding from Treasury Under the Coronavirus Relief Fund

The Treasury Department launched a web portal April 13, 2020, enabling eligible tribal governments to register for Coronavirus Relief Fund payments. Tribes must submit required information by April 17, 2020, at 11:59 PM Eastern to receive distributions by April 24. The Indian Affairs office stands ready to assist tribes navigating this critical funding process during the pandemic response.

US Adults’ Perceptions About the Harms of Nicotine in Electronic Vapor Products on the Adolescent Brain, United States, 2016-2017

Most US adults recognize that nicotine in electronic vapor products harms adolescent brain development. CDC research from 2016-2017 shows approximately two-thirds of adults understand this risk. Since e-cigarettes became the most popular tobacco product among youth, educating adults—especially those influencing teens—remains critical for prevention efforts.
