CDC Leadership Vacancy: Director, Office of Tribal Affairs and Strategic Alliances

This is to share a leadership opportunity within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support (CSTLTS). We are currently recruiting exceptional candidates to be considered for the position of Director of the Office of Tribal Affairs and Strategic Alliances (OTASA). OTASA connects tribal nations and tribal-serving organizations to CDC and ATSDR programs, and provides funding for building and improving cross-cutting tribal public health infrastructure.

The Director will serve as the official CDC point-of-contact and authority for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) public health issues and as a key member of the CSTLTS senior leadership team. The position requires knowledge of the unique and complex cultural, environmental, social, economic, political, and other interrelated factors that affect the health of AI/AN populations. CSTLTS improves community health outcomes by strengthening state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health agencies. CSTLTS plays a vital role in helping health agencies work to enhance their capacity and improve their performance to strengthen the public health system on all levels.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and coordinate with OS/HHS and other agency tribal liaisons on HHS-wide tribal activities, particularly the Secretary’s Tribal Advisory Committee (STAC), the Secretary’s Intradepartmental Council on Native American Affairs (ICNAA), HHS AI/AN Health Research Advisory Council (HRAC).
  • Manage relationships and collaborative activities and grants with national AI/AN organizations to inform and advance the mission and goals of CDC specific to promoting health and preventing disease among AI/AN populations.
  • Provide executive-level, expert-quality 1) formal and informal reports that address vital tribal issues, 2) multi-functional studies and analytical approaches, 3) expert findings, and 4) cogent, substantive recommendations that are used as the primary basis for key tribal executive-level management decisions.
  • Perform the administrative and personnel management functions relative to staff supervised and establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff.
