CDC, states update number of cases of hospitalized e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI)

CDC today announced the updated number of cases* of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated with lung injury (EVALI).

*As of December 4, 2019, CDC will only report hospitalized EVALI cases, and EVALI deaths regardless of hospitalization status.

Deaths

  • As of December 10, 2019, 52 deaths have been confirmed in 26 states and the District of Columbia:
    • Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
  • The median age of deceased patients was 52 years and ranged from 17 through 75 years.
  • More deaths are under investigation.

Although the number of reported cases appears to be declining, states are still reporting new hospitalized EVALI cases to CDC on a weekly basis and should remain vigilant with EVALI case finding and reporting.
