In August 2019, the CDC launched an urgent investigation into a mysterious lung injury outbreak linked to e-cigarette use. Termed EVALI, this novel syndrome hospitalized 2,807 people across all 50 states and resulted in 68 confirmed deaths. Cases peaked in September 2019 before declining through early 2020.

CDC OSH: Effects of E-Cigarette Use on Cigarette Smoking Among U.S. Youth, 2004-2018

A CDC study examining U.S. youth from 2004-2018 reveals that e-cigarette introduction coincided with slowing traditional cigarette smoking declines. While ever-smoking decreased, combined e-cigarette and cigarette use stalled. Importantly, e-cigarette users don't match traditional smoking risk profiles, yet nicotine exposure among youth continues expanding through new products.
